Trump–Putin
Summit in Alaska: Kremlin Gains Symbolism, Ukraine Gains No Peace.
On 16
August, Anchorage (Alaska, USA) hosted the first meeting in a decade between
Russian President Vladimir Putin and US President Donald Trump. The three-hour
talks ended with no ceasefire and no peace agreement.
Despite
claims of “progress,” the summit was primarily a symbolic victory for
the Kremlin. A red carpet, joint photographs, and warm protocol
allowed Moscow to present itself as “back on the world stage” — without making
any concessions.
UK
and European Reactions:
* Prime
Minister Keir Starmer commended US efforts but stressed that peace
cannot be achieved without Ukraine.
* For the first time, European allies dropped their demand for an immediate ceasefire, instead focusing on a “lasting peace agreement.”
* Britain is preparing to send military trainers and engineers after a ceasefire, as well as RAF jets to help police Ukrainian skies.
UISC
Conclusions:
* The
summit did not change the course of the war nor bring real peace closer.
* Putin
gained time and political space to continue his aggression.
* Ukraine
must remain a central participant in any negotiations.
* The
UK and allies must prevent the risk of a “frozen conflict” that legitimises
Russian occupation.
UISC
stresses: any
deal without Ukraine’s participation is illegitimate. Supporting Kyiv is a
matter of European security.
